Treatment Philosophy
Mission Statement
In keeping with American Medical Association guidelines, we believe
that alcoholism and other drug addiction is a primary, progressive
disease, rather than any manifestation of moral consequence, character
weakness, or psychological dysfunction.
Disease of Addiction
Since 1956, the AMA has recognized and defined alcohol addiction as a
primary disease, not a secondary symptom of an underlying
psychological or medical illness. Since then, this definition has
extended to define all chemical addictions as "chronic, progressive
diseases characterized by significant impairment that is directly
associated with persistent and excessive use of psychoactive
substances. Impairment may involve physiological, psychological, or
social dysfunction."
Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers is a proprietary chemical addiction
treatment corporation dedicated to providing a continuum of effective,
affordable alcohol and drug treatment to adults and adolescents in the
Pacific Northwest.
Philosophy on Alcoholism and Other Drug Addictions
Alcoholism and other drug addictions are primary illnesses rather than
derivative or secondary problems. Such an illness may be successfully
diagnosed, treated, and arrested. The alcoholic or drug addict is like
a person with cancer or diabetes—a disease sufferer who deserves
dignified treatment.
Alcoholism and other drug addictions are typically attended by
impaired emotional, interpersonal, psychological, and economic
adjustments, and by some degree of physical damage. A treatment
orientation which ignores these concomitants of alcoholism and other
drug addictions does not adequately treat the whole person, or his or
her illness.
